Action #4 - Ask Senators King and Collins to reject HR9495 in its current form and rewrite it.Remind Golden to study more carefully the bills he votes for!
HR9495 passed the House (with Golden’s vote, twice!) and is now in the hands of the Senate Ways and Means Committee for reconciliation. The bill as written now terminates the tax exempt status of “terrorist supporting organizations” as defined solely by a Trump-loyalist Secretary of the Treasury. The bill contains totally inadequate provisions for organizations to defend themselves. Even having to clear their name will be devastating to these organizations.
Any organization that dares to speak up against Trump policies is in jeopardy. This includes universities, the ACLU and other democracy defenders, health care organizations, climate activists and many others. Remind the Senators that there are 7000 nonprofit sector organizations in Maine employing 100,000 and contributing $14 billion to the economy
