Action 32 Request that Jared Golden hold a “town hall” in Hancock County
Background:
Congressman Golden represents ALL of the 2nd district in Maine, but sometimes it seems like he only listens to the “red” parts. Publicly he seems to be saying things to keep him in favor with Trump voters, but in doing so he is discounting and discouraging the majority of the people who actually voted for him. This makes him vulnerable to being primaried by a true-blue Democrat, with unpredictable results when the impacts of the Trumpocalypse start to be felt in the “red” part of CD2. He needs to be mindful of that.
On 2/4/25 he was quoted in the Portland Press Herald as saying “I’ve been getting a lot of calls over the past few days and the interesting thing is none of them are about Donald Trump. They’re all about Elon Musk. My constituents and a majority of this country put Trump in the White House, not this unelected weirdo billionaire. Musk is stepping on the president’s toes, making decisions without his approval and pursuing his own agenda.” (emphasis added)
This may be helpful in driving the inevitable wedge between Trump and Musk (there can only be one egomaniac in charge). But the sad thing about this is that Musk is acting with the full knowledge and consent of Trump, so those who voted for Trump DID actually vote for Musk, whether they can admit it or not. Also, it’s NOT TRUE (translate: it’s a lie) that his staff hasn’t received any calls about Trump and his egregious actions. Has his staff not told him?
Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic house leader, asked all the Democrats to hold town halls last week. Golden didn’t. A staffer at his Bangor office on 2/3/25 told a concerned caller that there were no plans to hold a town hall. The last town hall Golden held was apparently on 3/19/2019 in Farmington. He has not held one since, anywhere in his district.
People in Hancock and nearby counties are a very important segment of his 50.3% ranked choice win. We deserve the opportunity to talk with him in his district and get his help in the ongoing Trumpocalypse. What is he afraid of?
Action:
(1) Call and/or email Golden’s office. Give your name and your zip code every time. Say we want him to honor Hakeem Jeffries’ request to hold a town hall in Hancock County, possibly Blue Hill or Bar Harbor, areas that were important in his ranked choice win. We know he said publicly that he hasn’t been hearing from his constituents about Trump, but only Musk. That is not a true statement. We’ve been calling and emailing repeatedly. Donald Trump is the reason that Musk is running rampant, and if Trump cannot control Musk, he has no business being President.
(2) Contact the Maine Democratic Party headquarters and request that the party chair invite Representative Golden to hold a town hall in Hancock County, in furtherance of leader Jeffries’ request. It looks like the House is not in session from 18-23 February, so that might be a good time to hold a town hall, either in person or via Zoom.
