The Deer Isle Sunset Church is hosting a Meet the Candidates Event on February 17, 2025 at 3:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall, located at 57 Church Street in Deer Isle. The event includes candidates who are running for contested positions for Deer Isle Select Board and DIS School Board. It will give candidates an opportunity to introduce themselves to Island residents, give the audience an opportunity to ask questions, and provide time for one-on-one conversations with the candidates. The purpose of the meeting is to create an opportunity for us to be better informed in our choices of who will represent us in our local governments.

Alan Chesney, who will moderate the event, compares it to interviewing for a job. The candidates should be congratulated for stepping forward and indicating that they are willing to do the job, now the responsibility turns to citizens to decide who we think is best suited to be given the responsibility. Islanders have a proud tradition of local democratic decision making and we believe an informed electorate enhances that process. This will be a convenient way to learn more about each candidate. We trust it will ensure that each of us makes a more informed choice.

The Deer Isle Sunset Congregational Church recently (2023) celebrated 250 years of building community in Deer Isle and this event is one more way we hope to fulfill our mission. We are currently exploring additional ways we may be able to work with community groups to build a more thriving and peaceful community, and we would like to hear from you.
