Action 90 – SENATE! STOP SAVE!
Background: To our utter dismay and disgust, CD 2 Representative Golden voted today FOR the SAVE act. He was joined by the following Democrats: Case from Hawaii, Cuellar from Texas, Perez from Washington, (and Norcross from NJ who didn’t vote.). There was no earthly reason for him to do this. The vote was 220 to 208, so the Democrats’ votes wouldn’t have changed the outcome either way. He could have done the right thing, and chose deliberately to do the wrong thing. There need to be consequences.
What we must do now, is to get the Senate to reject this horrible piece of legislation. Per the nonpartisan League of Women Voters, this “shameful, anti-democratic bill” will disproportionately harm (among others): Married women who have changed their names; Rural voters; and Low-income voters. (Sounds like people you know, right?) It will also weaken the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993, a law passed to expand voter access.
It's bad enough that Trump intends to implement many of these provisions by Executive Order, which can be challenged in court. (see Action 81). We don’t need Democrats going along with this voter suppression and giving it a fig leaf of legitimacy!
Action: Call our two Senators and urgently demand that they reject the SAVE Act and do everything in their power to defeat it, even if it means participating in a filibuster. Whatever it takes. This MUST NOT STAND.
