Action 137 – Call Janet! Today!
Background: This is to encourage her to sign LD 1666 which will extend Ranked Choice Voting to the offices of Governor and State legislators. The League of Women Voters says the bill has language that will bolster its constitutionality. Here’s the issue, per the League: “It's likely that once our bill becomes law, it will be challenged in court due to an advisory opinion by the Maine Supreme Court in 2017, which said in non-binding language that RCV conflicted with the plurality language in the Maine State Constitution. This is why we have not been able to have the benefit of RCV for legislative and gubernatorial general elections. New language in the bill will give the courts a chance to take a fresh look at the law. In addition, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled in August 2024 that RCV elections comply with plurality requirements, and their decision states that the Maine Supreme Court got this question wrong. The Alaska decision could set a precedent for what comes next. Mainers approved of RCV in the 2016 referendum election, and it’s time to expand RCV to all state and federal elections like it was intended.”
Action: Call Governor Janet Mills’ office at 207-287-3531. Simply say your name, where you live in Maine, and that you want the option of Ranked Choice Voting for all offices including Governor and state legislators! Ask her to sign LD 1666.
Urgency: Call today.
