2025 Question 1
QUESTION 1: Citizen Initiative
Do you want to change Maine election laws to eliminate two days of absentee voting, prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members, end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities, ban prepaid postage on absentee ballot return envelopes, limit the number of drop boxes, require voters to show certain photo ID before voting, and make other changes to our elections?
Maine Democratic Party Position
Question 1 is a direct attack on Maine’s absentee voting system. 40% of Mainers voted absentee in the last election. If passed, Question 1 would dismantle the system nearly half of us rely on to make our voices heard.
It’s a threat to:
Rural Mainers who live far from polling places
Voters with disabilities who rely on accessibility
Seniors and others who need the flexibility to vote by mail
Working Mainers with multiple jobs
If passed, Question 1 would:
Ban prepaid return postage for absentee ballots
Prevent ballot requests by phone or by a family member
End ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and voters with disabilities
